If you decide to display your research project, you are eligible for extra credit points. Any extra credit earned through your project will be applied to your average at the end of the third quarter. This can really boost your average. Here are some examples of what this can do to your grade:
A. Mary has a 79% average for her third quarter mid-term grade. She has done an excellent science project display and has earned an extra 6 points. This makes Mary’s new average 85% and Mr. Rossi has added the report card comment “Excellent scientific thinking shown in extra credit project!”
B. Jerry has a 97% average for his third quarter mid-term grade. He has done a science project with his friend Kianah and earned an extra 5 points. This makes Jerry’s new average 102%. Since the grading software will not allow more than 100% as a grade, Mr. Rossi enters a 100% and the comment "Actual average is 102% because of extra credit project." However, 102% is used to calculate his final third quarter average.
The amount of extra credit that you earn depends upon the quality of your project, meeting deadlines, and whether or not you are working with a partner. Here are the guidelines that I follow when I calculate your extra credit points:
1. If you work alone, you may earn up to a maximum of six points for your project display.
2. If you work with a partner, you may earn up to a maximum of four points each for your project display.
3. If your project is not ready for the due dates, you are not eligible for any extra credit and you get penalized for not completing your research project.
